Arthritis refers to the inflammation of the joints caused by a low immune system. According to Ayurveda, arthritis is mainly caused by a polluted vata dosha and it is classified into three categories on the basis of its root cause and the role of the vata dosha.
While anti-inflammatory drugs or pain killers can have serious side effects on your kidneys, stomach, liver and heart, Ayurvedic medicines are much safer because they treat the disease by attacking the root cause.
Rheumatoid arthritis is known as Amavata in Ayurveda because according to Ayurveda, rheumatoid arthritis is caused due to bad ama and vata. The toxins produced due to poor digestion are called ama and vata is a type of dosha or biological energy. Ama spreads throughout the body and accumulates on weak joints, which intensifies the vata. This leads to inflammation which eventually turns into arthritis or rheumatism.
Osteoarthritis is considered similar to Sandhigata Vata in Ayurveda. This happens when imbalanced Vata accumulates in the joints. It is more common in women than men due to the effects of menopause. It usually affects the joints of the knees, ankles, spine and hips. This happens when there is a deficiency of calcium in the body or due to the effects of aging.
Gout is called vata rakta in ayurveda. It is believed that gout occurs due to bad vata and blood. When bad vata and blood get accumulated in the bones of the fingers and toes, then it is called Vata Rakta. It occurs due to excessive consumption of salty, spicy and sour foods and lack of physical activity. This is a very painful condition and can even make a person crippled. Other types of arthritis are also mentioned in Ayurvedic texts but these are the three main ones.
Arthritis according to ayurveda
Amavata: Rheumatoid arthritis, also known as rheumatism in Ayurveda, is a very painful disease. This disease occurs when the amount of uric acid in the blood is high. From the point of view of Ayurveda, this disease is caused due to the outbreak of ama and vata. Rheumatoid arthritis is the result of an aggravated ama and vata. Ama is created due to indigestion. These get accumulated in the weaker parts of the body and when this condition is combined with Vata dosha, rheumatism occurs.
Sandhi Gata Vata: Sandhi Gata Vata resembles Osteoarthritis and is caused when the spoiled Vata invades the joints. Women are more prone to this disease after menopause and it usually affects the joints of the knees, ankles, back and hips. This disease occurs when the amount of calcium in your body is low.
Vata Rakta: Vata Rakta is the Ayurvedic name for gout and it is believed to be the result of contaminated vata as well as contaminated rakta (khoon). This can be due to excessive consumption of salty, spicy and sour foods and lack of physical activity. It is a very painful condition and can also make a person crippled.
